Quarter 1 Assignements

The American dream

 1.  I agree with the arguement in the article because the American Dream is a "promise" to come to America and have oppurtunity and possibilities.  The possibilities in the American Dream include working normal hours and being able to live comfortably. Instead of  working excessive hours and not being able to see your children after work the American Dream should be the opposite. The American citizen should be able to live not luxury, but comfort, and not through working more than they should have to. The American Dream is about moving from harsh conditions to comfortable and reasonable conditions.

RHETORICAL ANALYSIS - PRECIS PAPER

2. My columnist, Colbert King, was an opinion write who focused on the current political sitution. Being an opinion writer, Colbert King focused used rhetoric to persuade his audience to agress with his claim or standpoint. Most if not all of his columns were written to the purpsoe to persuade or to inform.  One of King's favorite rhetorical devices is the use of examples. King frequently uses examples to emphasize any point he makes or to give actual instances of a prediction or claim he makes. Another one of his most used rhetorical devices is Ethos. King uses ethos through quotes, where he might use a credible person to give credibilty to his own claim through there support.

THE GREAT GATSBY

 3.  In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby is another American on the pursuit of happiness or trying the achieve the American Dream. He has the wealth anyone would desire but cannot acheive the America Dream because of his love, Daisy.  This is evidence to support that the American Dream is about satisfaction and happiness instead of wealth and possesion.  In Stanton's text she believes that the American Dream will be accomplished once women are granted rights. This differs from Gatsby because Stanton is focusing on gaining something while Gatsby actually has wealth that would statisfy others but he himself is still not satisfied.  Jefferson is similar, and he belives the American Dream could not be accomplished without seperating from Great Britain. Not only did he want seperating but he establsihed the ideals that make up the American Dream today: "Life, Liberty,  and The Pursuit of Happiness". I believe that true satisfaction is achieved when the indivudual is satisfied and does not need anything more.

Jefferson-Stanton Comparison Essay

4.  In my next paper i will strive to increase my sophistication. I will also do my best to increase the level of language used within my essay.  The RAVs , Rhetorically Accurate Verbs, used in my essay were of a higher level vocabulary but i tend to recycle the words used. I need to expand my voacublary and make sure i use college level synonyms instead of grade level synonyms. I also need  to learn how to manage my time so that i can finish my essay.

Timed Writes

5. The Synthesis Essay was my favorite timed write simply because it was my first time writing a Synthesis Essay. My first experience with a Synthesis Essay you could say was "fun". I was overloaded with the amount of evidence i had to work with and unfortunatley didn't finish. But the sort of, "art" that comes with pulling in evidence from different texts to serve one purpose is a lot of fun.

QUARTER 1 REFLECTION

6. This Quarter in AP Lang i learned how to effectively write a point by point essay. I also learned to to analyze rhetorical devices used in texts. The most meaningful assignment was the Jefferson-Stanton Comparison Essay, where i had to compare the rhetoric of two different texts. This was a challenge for me to analyze the authors rhetoric in not just one text but two and it taught me a lot. I gained the most from this essay as it served as great practice. I wish we had skipped the Gatsby Reading Room posts because it didn't really help with using rhetoric. I am looking forward to polishing my analytical skills in 4th Quarter and hopefully i can complete my asswignments on time.
